Where do you even begin?
After graduation, the “real world” can seem like an intimidating place. As recent grads, you are essentially thrust into being independent and expected to fend for yourself. When things look bleak, remember you are not alone. There are many people and resources available to help you succeed in your career.
Here are some job search tips for grads we have come up with as a top staffing agency in Florida. We hope you find them helpful!
1. Take a Break
Allow yourself to take a little break, if possible, even if it is just a micro break. Give yourself a pat on the back for your accomplishments. You worked hard for your degree. You deserve and could benefit from some downtime. It is important to clear your head and mentally prepare yourself for the job search ahead.
2. Don’t Wait Too Long to Take Action
It can be fairly easy to get comfortable being unemployed, so don’t wait too long before you begin your job search. Create a game plan for yourself. Here is a great strategy from our colleagues at The Muse to give you inspiration. Check it out!
3. Find a Mentor
A mentor can be incredibly helpful, whether it is a parent, a sibling, a life coach, or someone far along in the field you are interested in. Mentors can offer you great anecdotes, provide moral support, and hold you accountable. They make great sounding boards as well. Recruiters also make great mentors, just saying.
4. Don’t Be Too Hard on Yourself
During your job search, it is inevitable you will hear “no” for an answer, likely more than once. We encourage you to shake it off and not give up. Try not to take rejection personally. Keep plugging along and don’t allow yourself to get too discouraged.
5. Just Start Working
You are not necessarily going to find your dream job right off the bat. We recommend working in retail, hospitality or serving to simply gain some experience. It can help you develop a work ethic and a taste of what it is like to work full-time. You will also cultivate skills in customer service, learn responsibility, and get a feel for corporate culture. These abilities will ultimately make you a marketable candidate and a more desirable employee. You not doing yourself a disservice by taking a “day job” whilst looking for your career.
