Confidence in the Workplace

“There is no secret routine, there is no magical number of reps and sets. What there is, is confidence, belief, hard work on a consistent basis, and a desire to succeed.” – Unknown

A study conducted by the researchers at Georgia State University found that 33% of high-achieving adults did not feel they deserved their success. How can that be?

Self-confidence is essential in nearly every aspect of our lives, especially in the workplace. Unfortunately many people lack self-assurance and it can greatly impede their success. After all, aren’t you are more likely to be influenced by someone who speaks assertively?

The good news is that confidence in the workplace can be learned and improved upon. It may not be easy, but it is well worth it. Here are a few steps you can take to build your feelings of self-worth.

1. Find A Mentor

Having someone supporting you and guiding you can significantly improve self-esteem. A mentor or a life coach can offer non-bias career advice and provide you with objective opinions. You also may be more willing to take risks knowing someone has your back in case you fail.

2. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone Each Day

We have all heard some version of this one before, but do not be quick to dismiss this advice. When you are not taking action, feelings of doubt and fear of failure can easily crop up. This fear can paralyze you and make you feel stuck. When in doubt, take action. Don’t be afraid to take risks. Challenging yourself daily can significantly help you build your confidence in the workplace.

3. Speak To Yourself Positively

It can be very difficult to feel confident when you are continually putting yourself down. Stop the negative self-talk and don’t beat yourself up. Use kind words, positive language, and treat yourself with care. If you find the way you speak to yourself is not how you would talk to a friend, it is time to make a change.

4. Focus On Others

Get out of your head and decide to be conscious of others rather than self-conscious. Ask people questions and try to find a common ground. Give others generous compliments and help others whenever possible. By seeking the best in others you are better able to see the best in yourself.

5. Make Time To Be Grateful

In a recent study of how successful people spend the first hour of each day, the number one response was investing time in thinking about the things for which they are most grateful. By beginning your day feeling thankful for all the good things in your life it can set a positive mood for the entire day.

Just like management and software proficiency, confidence is a professional skill that can be cultivated. According to Dr. Peter Buckley of Georgia Regents University, “As you add experiences, you’re more likely to gain confidence. And with confidence, you will embrace new experiences.” If you are feeling stuck, you can reverse the cycle. We hope these tips will help you on the road to feeling more confident in the workplace.
