Time flies when you’re busy!
Every business goes through a lull at some time of the year. Perhaps you are experiencing one right now? Or about to enter one? Naturally time can seem to slow down considerably when things are less fast paced in the office.
So, what do you do to make the time go by? Instead of watching the clock or scrolling mindlessly through Facebook, there are many ways to turn a slow work day into a productive one.
As one of the leading staffing agencies in Florida, we know what it is like to be busy. We also know how to make the best of our slower periods. Here are some suggestions to help get you through a slow work day. Hope they help!
1. Tie Up Loose Ends
The first thing to do on a slow work day is make sure you really are all caught up. Be sure you have responded to all your messages. Maybe you left an issue unresolved or left a contact hanging. Try to empty out your inbox as much as possible and mark the outstanding ones for future follow up. Create folders for emails you would like to keep, but don’t need to be in your inbox.
2. Clean & Organize
A slow work day allows you to do all the things you don’t have time to do when you are swamped. It’s a good time to wipe down any dust and germs from your desk, phone, mouse, and keyboard. Go through old files, both electronically and paper folders, and purge what you no longer need. Possibly rearrange some things to be more efficient.
3. Get Ahead
Do you have a list of work goals for the future? If you have a slow work day, it gives you time to plan ahead. Come up with a long-term to-do list and maybe begin to brainstorm on how you propose to accomplish each task. You can create projects for yourself or ask your supervisor for suggestions.
4. Expand Your Knowledge
When you’re having a slow work day, it’s an excellent time to read up on and learn about new trends in your industry. Check out blogs in your field or watch informative videos on YouTube. You could even brush up on your computer skills. Here is a link to some free resources!
5. Help Others
Once you have exhausted your personal to-do list, be a team player. Ask fellow colleagues if they need assistance with their desk. Even if it’s just busy work, it always needs to be done and can keep you occupied. This is also a great way to please your boss.
