Job Search Follow Up

Just checking in…

No matter what stage of the job search process you are in, follow up is necessary. Don’t just sit back and wait. Instead, take matters into your own hands. It is important to take action, as it makes a good impression, and, of course, you are more likely to get an answer if you follow up.

As one of the best staffing agencies in Florida, we review why job search follow up is not only recommended, but mandatory. We hope you find this information helpful!

Be Professionally Persistent

When it comes to job search follow up, there is a difference between being persistent and being a pest. Eagerness to work is an attractive quality in a candidate, but you don’t want to harass anyone for answers. You don’t want to come across as desperate or inconsiderate. Make sure you are polite and professional. When there are hundreds of applicants vying for the same position, it is simply impossible to get back to everyone. Hiring managers and recruiters don’t purposefully leave job seekers hanging, so don’t give up.

Be Understanding

If you have already taken the time to apply or interview, it’s completely appropriate to follow up and ask about next steps. Following up shows your interest and commitment, and assures that you don’t get lost in the shuffle. Keep in mind the hiring process takes time. People are busy, priorities shift, and circumstances change. Even if you receive a rejection from an employer, don’t burn any bridges and respond in a courteous manner. You never know if you may need those connections in the future.

Be Organized

After meeting with someone professionally, ask for their business card. Having their contact information gives you more control in the follow up process. In order to keep track of everything, you could create a job search follow up log, which will help you stay organized.

Be Strategic

When planning your job search follow up, it’s important to be strategic in your approach. Here are some suggestions for when to follow up, though ultimately it’s a judgement call. Following up via email is a good first step, as the hiring manager or recruiter can follow up with you on their own time. In your follow up, include how you could contribute to the company and show your enthusiasm, but keep it short and to the point.

  • Paper / Electronic Application – 5-10 business days
  • Phone Interview – Same day
  • In Person Interview – Same day or day after (bonus if it’s handwritten)
  • “I’ll let you know when I have an update.” Email or Phone Call – 5-7 business days

If you want to succeed in finding a new job, you must follow up. It’s not optional. If you have made multiple attempts to follow up with no response, it may be time to move on.
