It doesn’t add up…
Accounting degrees are more in demand in the workforce than ever. There are too many jobs and not enough accountants to fill them. The lack of skilled accountants has been an issue for the past few decades. Top talent in accounting is always at a premium, and we are feeling the hurt here in our staffing firm. We need accountants from entry level to CEO.
As one of the leading employment agencies in Florida, we tried to determine why there is such a shortage of accounting talent. We would love to hear your insights as well, and invite you to share them in the comments.
There are a lot of people who are currently working in accounting, but many are underemployed. Often there is no room for them to grow where they are currently working or perhaps they are not getting the credit they deserve. Some accountants are looking to advance in their career, since they are not using their degree to its full potential. However, it can be easy to feel stuck or comfortable in a job when you have no motivation to look for a new one.
Pay & Benefits
Accounting professionals who are relocating to Florida generally want more pay than employers are willing to offer. This is one of the biggest contributors to the shortage of accounting talent. Job seekers in accounting are looking for a better quality of life. Employers would be wise to provide excellent perks and benefits to attract and retain accounting talent. Otherwise freelance is often a better option, as it allows an accountant to consult multiple companies simultaneously.
Education & Growth
The shortage of accounting talent seems to be rooted in education, as there is a growing gap between what accountants do and what accounting educators teach. As a result, universities are partnering with businesses to close skill gap and align needs. There is great room for growth in the field of accounting, especially if education is continued while working. In fact, The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment in the accounting field will grow 11% from 2014 – 2024.
