“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.”
With all the chaos and tragedy in the world right now it can be very difficult to stay thankful. In fact, an estimated 8.3 million adults in America suffer from serious psychological distress, according to recent federal health data. The stress of the upcoming holidays certainly doesn’t help the situation either.
Even if it feels like you have lost all hope in humanity, there are still so many reasons to be thankful. Sometimes you have to go back to the basics and focus on the little things that make you happy.
As one of the leading staffing agencies in Florida state, we know how important it is to stay upbeat! Here are some ways to stay thankful in a seemingly thankless world. We hope they help!
Disengage from the Negative
You cannot completely remove yourself from the all the negativity in the world, but you can minimize your exposure. Take control and try to limit time spent watching the news or reading depressing articles. Disconnect from social media, put your phone away and distract yourself from the drama for a while.
Plug in to the Positive
In an effort to stay thankful, it is best to surround yourself with positive people and keep each other cheerful. Find a hobby that reinforces feelings of gratitude, like painting, yoga, or dancing. Engage in light conversation with your coworkers and be careful not to complain to one another. Misery does love company, but it doesn’t allow for thankfulness. A positive attitude is contagious.
Express your gratitude for all you have been given in this life. You are here, breathing and reading this right now! Feeling grateful turns our mental focus to the optimistic side and creates positive emotions like joy, love, and contentment. Be grateful for your health and wellbeing, your abilities, your friends and family, and your strength to keep trying. Even if you are living minute to minute, just trying to make it through the day, do your best to be joyful.
If you are feeling especially down, it’s important to focus on self-care. Do things that make you feel good about yourself. Make sure you are well-fed and hydrated. Get up, have a shower and take a little walk. Allow yourself to relax and get some sleep. It’s amazing how these seemingly simple actions can make us feel whole and leave more room for us to be thankful.
Sometimes by turning your attention outward, you begin to feel more thankful yourself. Acknowledging that there are many people less fortunate than you can put things into perspective. Support a friend in need or provide a random act of kindness to a stranger. Helping others can make your own heart happy, too. Life is so much easier in the affirmative mode.
This Thanksgiving, we invite you to share with us what makes you thankful. What are you grateful for this year? Let us know in the comments!
